San Juan plays two roles. On many Florida itineraries it is a port of call, often an afternoon-and-evening stop that lets you see the old city lit up. It is also a departure port: fly in, board in the old town, and start the cruise already in the heart of the islands.
Cruise ships dock along the edge of Old San Juan, so you can walk off the ship and into blue cobblestone streets, pastel colonial buildings and plazas within minutes. The two great Spanish forts, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, are part of San Juan National Historic Site, managed by the U.S. National Park Service, and are an easy walk from the piers.
What to Do in Old San Juan
El Morro
The six-level fortress at the harbor mouth, with the lawn where local families fly kites and views out to the Atlantic.
San Cristóbal
The larger fort on the land side of the old city, with tunnels and sentry boxes along the walls.
Old-town walks
La Fortaleza, the governor’s residence, the cathedral, Paseo de la Princesa and many small plazas, cafés and shops.
Beyond the walls
Tours to El Yunque rainforest and the beaches of Condado and Isla Verde work on a full-day call.

Why Start a Cruise in San Juan
A San Juan departure trades the two-day run from Florida for a flight. The pay-off is time: the first island is usually the next morning, and a week can include five or six ports instead of two or three. Many San Juan itineraries go south into St. Lucia, Barbados and the islands near South America, so read our sister site Southern Caribbean Cruises if that is where your ship spends the week.
